PLAZA DE ARMAS-MAIN SQUARE

 

The City of Ovalle. As young as its people the city of Ovalle which was founded in 1831, in the begginnings of the republic. This city took its name in honour of the Vece President of that time Mr. Jose Tomas Ovalle. The first image that the visitor always keeps in mind is the Plaza de Armas (Main Square). This quit public square sourounded by beatiful jaracandas offers peace for the body and spirit. Parallel to the main square go along Vicuña Mackena and Libertad streets where you will find 1 or two storey buildings of neoclasical style. The buildings maintain betiful and classical window frames and doors. This is also the place where people from hundred of villages around the area of Limari trade and get supplies. The former Raylway Station has now become the Cultural center where the Public Library is located. the auditorium and a modern museum where you will find the most complete Diaguita ceramic collection in the country. Up of Benavente street you will find the "feria", trade center of Limari.
