Chile is an elongated fringe of land which extends from the south-western edge of America, between the Andes mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Also forming part of its territory, are more than 5 800 Antarctic islands and islets. It borders Peru to the north, the South Pole to the south, to the east Bolivia and Argentina and to the west, the Pacific Ocean. Four thousand kilometres separate Arica, on its northern border, and Puerto Williams, the country's (and world's) southern most urban centre.Its long and slim shape explains the diversity of landscapes, climate, flora and fauna in Chile. Places such as Easter Island in the Pacific, San Pedro de Atacama in the northern deserts, and the Torres del Paine National Park in the southern extreme demonstrate further its diversity.
